Story About DASC?

I started my career in software development, focusing on data warehousing and forecasting in the utility industry. I found myself building consulting teams, but also with a growing interest in statistics, machine learning, and other areas of data science. I went to the product space and built a team focused on advanced deep learning, especially around natural language processing. However, there were some aspects of the board that I missed. When I was contacted by the BASC, it was an opportunity to put all the right pieces together and build a data practice .

What is the best comment you have received?

After a project that I was working on with another developer who was transitioning to the platform from a previous language, I received top marks from him. He said that he didn’t think he could make the switch and that he was considering retiring early. He attributed my patience with his questions to his decision to stick it out. Like I told you, he deserved the credit for the time he took to get back into training, not me. But the feedback has marked me, and I’m trying to learn the lesson.

How are you supporting customers right now?

DASC has many insurances, medical, manufacturing, and other businesses that deal with large volumes of complex data. My role is to help guide a strategy for this, align it with the right teams, and make sure we deliver.

What do you think companies need more help with right now?

The technology landscape has changed very quickly and shows no signs of slowing down. Furthermore, the business climate is very focused on short-term returns, as opposed to long-term investments. I think companies need help taking a broader view of their strategy to create the foundations that will support continuous integrations and emerging technologies like AI.

What do you think they should think about next?

It is difficult to apply a single strategy that works in the same way in all sectors. That said, I think almost any business today would do well to focus on a data strategy and create a great work environment (real or virtual) for their team.

What are you waiting for in your sector?

As technology evolves, our team members have even more power to focus on the heart of the problem and not how it is implemented. When that happens, we find ourselves talking to leaders about their goals and visions to delight their stakeholders and customers. These are the best conversations to have. People are proud of the organization they have built and it is a great feeling to help them achieve new goals.
